The Durban Botanic Gardens is a classic botanic gardens.It was founded in 1849 for the introduction and trial of potentially useful commercial crops.The gardens later developed collections of sub-tropical trees, palms and orchids.It has, for over 100 years, had a fine mixed arboretum of African, Asian and American trees. The Gardens hosts approximately 500 000 visitors per year, many of whom are foreign tourists.

Durban Harbour

In 1947,Vasco da Gama named the rather large river mouth 'Rio do Natal'. Durban harbour has since become the largest harbour in Africa and the ninth largest in the world. The low water depth was initially less than 2 metres. Constant dredging has allowed for large ships to be able to enter the Bay (its low water depth is now 6m). In early times, almost all the Bay was fringed with mangrove swamps, but unfortunately only a small patch now remains.
